Colossians 2:6-23
Colossians 2:6-7 could be restated like this:
Remember when y’all first received or accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord? That happened. It’s fact. Now this needs to happen:
Keep going! Continue following him! (Still as your Lord, by the way. Never forget that he is King of all creation — including you.)
Be like strong and healthy trees, deeply rooted in him. Know him. Know about him. Be with him. Worship him.
Be like a strong and sturdy tower, built on him as a rock-solid foundation. Trust him. Honor him. Obey him.
Be absolutely and totally all-in with faith and truth. (There are plenty of counterfeits out there. Beware!)
By the way, this is going to require some serious learning by all y’all, which means there needs to be some serious teaching of all y’all. (Are you learning? Are there people teaching you?)
Also: be thankful. Really and very thankful. Because none of us deserves any of this.
Colossians 1:6-23
The Greek words for “root” and “to be rooted” are where we get the modern word “rhizome.” Unless you’re a botanist or gardener, the word probably doesn’t mean much to you. It’s related to the root structure of certain plants.
Like many other words, rhizome has taken on new meanings because of its simple imagery. The thesaurus lists these synonyms for rhizome:
These are modern synonyms, but if you think about it, they perfectly fit the ideas Paul wrote about almost 2000 years ago.
